Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA)

Finding Medicare too confusing?  Talk to a SHIBA volunteer!

Review your Medicare questions with a SHIBA volunteer. SHIBA, (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors), is a program of the State Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s consumer protection services and Information and Assistance.

SHIBA volunteers provide free, unbiased, and confidential help with Medicare and related health care choices to people of all ages and backgrounds.

Our volunteer advisors can help you:

  • Assess your Medicare related health care coverage needs.
  • Determine your general eligibility for health care coverage programs.
  • Evaluate and compare health insurance plans and programs.
  • Provide enrollment help with Medicare.
  • Speak with 1-800-MEDICARE on your behalf.
  • Make referrals to other agencies and programs.
  • Collect and report possible Medicare fraud complaints.  Be aware of Medicare fraud.

SHIBA volunteers provide free, confidential, one-on-one help at first-come-first-served walk-in clinics. Our calendar includes our walk-in clinic schedule.  You can receive assistance over the phone by calling 1-800-562-6900 or emailing the SHIBA Program at: SHIBA.o3a@dshs.wa.gov.  No one will try to sell you anything because we don’t have anything to sell.

Are you aware that you need to protect your Medicare card?

Medicare loses $60 billion every year to fraud. That’s $1,000 per person! The cost to all beneficiaries goes up. It also means you may not be able to get the services you need because someone has already claimed them. Fraud might result in identity theft!

Find more information about fraud, waste and abuse here: https://www.insurance.wa.gov/how-identify-and-report-medicare-fraud-and-abuse
